The 13th Dinant Jazz Nights festival will happen fom 16 to 20 July 2010 in the gardens of the Abbey of Leffe with Manu Katché as godfather.

Manu Katché is one of the best contemporary drummers. He has played among others with Sting, Peter Gabriel, Joni Mitchell, Black Eyed Peas, Dire Straits, Simple Minds, Michel Jonasz, Francis Cabrel, Stéphane Eicher, Laurent Voulzy

But he is also an ECM artist and has played with the best jazz musicians such as Jan Garbarek, Michel Petrucciani, Tomasz Stanko, Ralph Towner, David Sanborn, Richard Galliano, Al Di Meola, Manu Dibango, Jeff Beck, Eric Legnini or Frank Avitabile.

Emmanule “Manu” Katché was born in St Maur des Fossés, near Paris, though his family roots go back to Africa’s Ivory Coast. He studied piano from the age of 5, switching to drums at 14 and studying classical percussion at the Conservatoire National Supérieure de Musique de Paris. He has often said that his drum style is essentially an amalgam of African rhythm concepts and classical percussion techniques, illuminated by the in-the-moment interaction of jazz.

Emmanuel ‘Manu’ Katché was first widely-recognized as a pop drummer in the mid-1980s, his loping, floating beat eagerly embraced by musicians from Peter Gabriel to Sting to Joni Mitchell. In 1988, Manfred Eicher heard him playing on Robbie Robertson’s untitled Geffen album and felt that his pulses and patterns, simultaneously modern and tribal, could easily be adapted to improvised contexts. Katché himself had already given the matter some thought: it transpired he’d been an ECM follower since his teenage years, when he was studying percussion at the Paris Conservatory, and listening to the label’s albums – particularly those of Jan Garbarek, Keith Jarrett and John Abercrombie - had helped him shape some of his own ideas concerning jazz and ensemble playing and the relationship of sound and silence.

After having released two albums on his own on ECM, “Neighbourhood” and “Playground”, Manu will play the music of his third album on ECM during his stay in Dinant in July 2010.

A concert that will be hopefully as beautiful as the one he has performed in 2006 during his stay in Dinant for the ECM festival.

Katché is also involved in French television programs. He was part of the jury for the “Nouvelle Star” and is currently the master of ceremony (and obviously also the drummer) of a musical program broadcasted on Arte called “One Shot Not”.

No doubt that he will set up with the festival organizers an amazing musical program in 2010.
